The designs of these hand made wood masks from the state of Guerrerro, Veracruz and the Sonoran Desert are commonly based on ceremonial dance masks that have been used for centuries in fiestas that honor specific sacred occasions, saints and historical events. Most often they are representations of combinations of deities, animals and common archetypes. Celestial Beings, Angels, Devils and Death are also predominant themes. Also included here are Oaxacan jaguar masks; a modern offshoot of the myriad creations of some of the renowned artists who are best known for their free standing alebrijes.
