Traditional + Popular Masks
Handmade Mexican masks have a vibrant and enduring history; they were often employed for sacred dance and ritual. Our fascination with them may lie therein ~ we can't help feeling that if we gazed at them long enough and could interpret their inscrutable expressions, they would tell us wondrous, long~forgotten stories of other ages and ancestors. In the post-conquest period, ornamental wall plaques and winged celestial beings were commissioned as decoration for the myriad ornate churches that were built in profuse numbers throughout Mexico. Today this art form is being reproduced and recreated in many popular, modern incarnations, and new styles and traditions are continually evolving and being created.
